Students of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) are usually asked for a percentage on job and admission forms, while their marksheet shows a CGPA. The commonly used VTU formula is:
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
So a CGPA of 8.0 becomes (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%.
Step by step
- Take your final CGPA from the marksheet.
- Subtract 0.75.
- Multiply the result by 10.
- Round only the final answer, and keep the decimals before that.
Worked examples
- 9.0 CGPA: (9.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 82.5%
- 8.5 CGPA: (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%
- 7.5 CGPA: (7.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 67.5%
- 7.0 CGPA: (7.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 62.5%
- 6.0 CGPA: (6.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 52.5%
Percentage to CGPA for VTU
To go the other way, divide the percentage by 10 and add 0.75. For example, 70% ÷ 10 + 0.75 = 7.75 CGPA, and 60% gives 6.75 CGPA.
Is it different from the CBSE formula?
Yes. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, and some universities use CGPA × 10. For an 8.0 CGPA those give 76% and 80%, while VTU gives 72.5%. Do not mix them. Use the formula that belongs to your university.
Things to check before you use the number
- Your scheme and year. University rules can change between schemes. Check the latest VTU circular or your college office if you are unsure.
- What the form asks for. Some employers want the official percentage or a certificate from the university, not your own calculation.
- Use your final CGPA. A semester SGPA should not go into this formula unless your university says so.
