Ideal weight formulas used
| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 ft | 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 ft |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 ft | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 ft |
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 ft | 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 ft |
Healthy BMI range
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal for adults. Multiplying those values by your height in meters squared gives a healthy weight range, which this calculator shows next to the formula results.
Why ideal weight is only an estimate
Formulas ignore muscle mass, bone structure, age and body fat distribution. Two people with the same height can both be healthy at different weights. Use the result as a guide, and pair it with waist size or body fat percentage for a fuller picture.

Frequently asked questions
What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight is an estimated healthy weight for your height and sex. Several formulas exist, including Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi, and each gives a slightly different number.
Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
None is perfect. They were created for medical dosing and give similar results for average builds. Many people look at the healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 alongside them.
Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight range?
Not exactly. Formulas give a single estimate, while the healthy BMI range shows a span of weights that fit the normal category for your height.
Does muscle mass change my ideal weight?
Yes. Muscle is denser than fat, so athletes and muscular people can weigh more than the formulas suggest and still be healthy. Body fat percentage can give a better picture.
Does age affect ideal weight?
The formulas do not use age, but body composition changes with age. Older adults may have a slightly different healthy range, so ask your doctor for personal advice.
What if my height is under 5 feet?
The formulas were built around heights above 5 feet (60 inches). Below that they are extended mathematically, so treat the result as a rough guide and use the healthy BMI range too.
