How to Calculate Attendance Percentage
Attendance percentage shows what share of the classes, days or hours you were actually present for. Divide the number you attended by the total number held, then multiply by 100.
Example: you attended 42 of 50 classes. 42 ÷ 50 = 0.84, and 0.84 × 100 = 84% attendance. Your absence rate is the rest: 100% − 84% = 16%.
How Many Classes Can I Miss and Still Keep My Attendance?
If you want to stay at or above a required percentage (for example 75%), the number of additional classes you can skip is:
Example: you attended 30 of 36 classes and need 75%. 30 ÷ 0.75 = 40, and 40 − 36 = 4 classes you can still miss. After that, 30 of 40 is exactly 75%.
How Many Classes Do I Need to Attend to Reach 75%, 80% or 90%?
If you are below your target, use this to find how many classes you must attend in a row from now on:
Example: you attended 20 of 30 classes (66.7%) and want 75%. (75 × 30 − 100 × 20) ÷ 25 = 10 classes. After 10 more, you are at 30 of 40 = 75%. Note that 100% can never be reached again once you have missed a class.

Most U.S. public schools run about 180 days a year. Here is what common attendance rates mean in days. Many schools and states define chronic absenteeism as missing 10% or more of school days, which is about 18 days in a 180-day year.
| Attendance rate | Days attended | Max days absent |
|---|---|---|
| 95% | 171 days | 9 days |
| 90% | 162 days | 18 days |
| 85% | 153 days | 27 days |
| 80% | 144 days | 36 days |
| 75% | 135 days | 45 days |
What Is a Good Attendance Percentage?
- College and university: many courses and institutions require around 75% to 80%, but policies vary widely. Always check your syllabus or student handbook.
- K-12 school: 95% or higher is a common goal, and 90% is often treated as the level where absences start to add up.
- Work and training: attendance targets depend on the employer, contract or program. Switch the counter to days or hours to track shifts.
