CGPA, GPA, SGPA and percentage often get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. A percentage is based on marks. The others are based on grade points. Knowing which one a form is asking for saves you from entering the wrong number.
The terms in plain wo
rds
- Percentage: marks you scored divided by total marks, times 100.
- Grade point: the number a letter grade or marks range is worth, for example 8 or 9 on a 10-point scale.
- SGPA: the average grade point for one semester.
- CGPA: the cumulative average across all semesters completed so far.
- GPA: in many Indian systems an average for a term. In the US it usually means the overall average on a 4.0 scale.
Exact definitions vary by institution, so always read the wording on your own marksheet.
Quick comparison
| Term | What it measures | Typical scale |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage | Marks out of total marks | 0 to 100 |
| SGPA | One semester | Often out of 10 |
| CGPA | All semesters so far | 10, 4, 5 or 7 |
| US GPA | Overall average of grades | 4.0 |
How a CGPA is built
Most universities weight each semester by its credits. If both semesters have equal credits, the CGPA is just the average of the SGPAs. For example, an SGPA of 8.0 and 9.0 with 20 credits each gives (8 × 20 + 9 × 20) ÷ 40 = 8.5.
If the credits differ, the semester with more credits counts for more. With 8.0 over 24 credits and 9.0 over 16 credits, the CGPA is (8 × 24 + 9 × 16) ÷ 40 = 8.4, not 8.5.
Why the scale matters
A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and an 8.5 on a 10-point scale are not the same number measured differently, they are different systems. Always write the scale with the number, such as 8.5/10 or 3.5/4.0. A bare “8.5” can be misread.
When you need to convert
- Admission and scholarship forms in India often ask for a percentage.
- Job applications sometimes ask for a percentage even if your degree reports a CGPA.
- Applications abroad may ask for a 4.0 GPA or an evaluation of your transcript.
Any conversion is an estimate. The formula depends on your board or university. We cover it step by step in How to Convert CGPA to Percentage.

Frequently asked questions
Is CGPA the same as percentage?
No. CGPA is an average of grade points. A percentage is based on marks. You need a formula to move from one to the other.
Can I convert SGPA to percentage?
Some institutions publish a formula for SGPA, but most conversion rules are written for CGPA. Check your university rules before using one.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
In many Indian systems, GPA or SGPA covers one term and CGPA covers all terms so far. In the US, GPA usually means the overall average.
Is 8 CGPA good?
It depends on the program and the institution. With the CBSE formula, an 8 CGPA is about 76%, but each university or employer judges it in its own way.
