CGPA is an average of grade points, not a percentage, so you need a formula to turn it into one. The right formula depends on your board or university. For the 10-point CBSE scale, the guideline is simple: multiply your CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.2 becomes 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%.
This guide shows the formulas step by step, with worked examples, so you can check any result yourself.
The CGPA to percentage formulas
- CBSE (10-point): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
- Simple 10-point systems: Percentage = CGPA × 10
- VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- 4, 5 or 7-point scales: Percentage = (CGPA ÷ scale) × 100
CBSE does not print a percentage on its marksheets, so the CBSE result is an indicative percentage. Your institution has the final say on which formula counts.
How to convert CGPA to percentage in 4 steps
- Find your CGPA and its scale. Check the marksheet. Is it out of 10, 4, 5 or 7?
- Find the official formula. Look at your board or university rules, or at what the college or employer you are applying to asks for.
- Apply the formula. Multiply or divide as shown above.
- Round at the end. Keep the decimals during the calculation and round only the final answer.
Worked examples
CBSE, 8.2 CGPA: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%.
4-point scale, 3.2 CGPA: (3.2 ÷ 4) × 100 = 80%.
5-point scale, 4.1 CGPA: (4.1 ÷ 5) × 100 = 82%.
7-point scale, 5.6 CGPA: (5.6 ÷ 7) × 100 = 80%.
Why the same CGPA can give different percentages
Take a CGPA of 8.5 on a 10-point scale. The three common formulas give three different answers:
| Formula | Result for 8.5 CGPA |
|---|---|
| CBSE (× 9.5) | 80.75% |
| Simple (× 10) | 85% |
| VTU ((CGPA − 0.75) × 10) | 77.5% |
That is a gap of 7.5 points for the same grades. This is why you should always use the formula your institution names, not the first one you find online.
How to convert percentage back to CGPA
Reverse the formula. With the CBSE method, divide the percentage by 9.5. For example, 80% ÷ 9.5 = 8.42 CGPA. With the VTU method, divide the percentage by 10 and add 0.75, so 72.5% gives 72.5 ÷ 10 + 0.75 = 8.0 CGPA.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the CBSE multiplier on a 4-point CGPA. A 3.5 out of 4 would become 33.25%, which is clearly wrong. Divide by the scale instead.
- Rounding too early. Rounding the CGPA before multiplying can shift the final percentage.
- Mixing a percentage with a US letter grade. A US grade table and an Indian percentage do not line up one to one.
- Treating an estimate as official. A calculator result is an estimate. It is not a certificate.
When you need an official conversion
For admissions abroad, scholarships or some government jobs, the receiving institution may ask for an official conversion letter from your university or a credential evaluation. Evaluation services often use their own conversion tables, so their numbers can differ from a simple formula. Ask the institution what they accept before you put a converted number on a form.

Frequently asked questions
Is CGPA × 9.5 an official percentage?
It is the conversion CBSE recommends for an approximate percentage. The board itself does not issue a percentage on the marksheet.
What is 9 CGPA in percentage?
With the CBSE formula, 9 × 9.5 = 85.5%. With the simple × 10 method, it is 90%.
Can I use one formula for every university?
No. Each board or university sets its own rule. Use the one that your institution or the receiving institution specifies.
How do I convert a CGPA that is not out of 10?
Divide the CGPA by the maximum of your scale and multiply by 100. For a 4-point scale, 3.6 becomes 3.6 ÷ 4 × 100 = 90%.
